The political playbook in Virginia has officially shifted from governing to gaslighting, and the lead actress in this production is none other than Governor Abigail Spanberger. For years, Spanberger carefully crafted a persona as the moderate, bipartisan “Blue Dog” Democrat who just wanted to bring rural broadband and “common sense” to the Commonwealth. She looked voters in the eye and promised independence from the radical wing of her party. But now that she’s sitting in the Governor’s mansion, the mask hasn’t just slipped—it has been incinerated.
The most egregious betrayal is the current assault on Virginia’s district maps. In 2020, Virginians overwhelmingly voted for a constitutional amendment to end partisan gerrymandering, putting redistricting in the hands of a bipartisan commission. It was supposed to be a win for fairness. However, Spanberger and her allies in the legislature are currently trying to blow that system up with a high-stakes power grab. They have pushed a referendum for tomorrow, April 21, 2026, that would temporarily strip power from that commission and hand it back to the Democratic-controlled General Assembly.
Why the sudden change of heart? Because they want to force through a “lobster-shaped” gerrymander that could flip the state’s congressional split from a fair 6-5 to a lopsided 10-1 in favor of Democrats. It is the ultimate “cheat” code. They are trying to convince you that this is about “fairness” and “retaliating against Trump,” but in reality, it’s about ensuring that your vote only counts if it’s for their team. Spanberger, who once claimed she had “no plans” to redistrict Virginia, signed the very legislation that made this partisan nightmare possible.
This is how the game is played by people like Spanberger. They run as centrists to fool the people in the suburbs, then they govern like partisans to satisfy the string-pullers in DC. Her early-term approval ratings are already cratering because the people who voted for a “steady hand” are instead getting a radical architect of gerrymandering. She campaigned on affordability and kitchen-table issues, yet she has spent her first few months obsessing over district lines and protecting her party’s power at the expense of the state’s own constitution. The “Simpleton” in their eyes is anyone who still believes their rhetoric.

The truth is that Virginia is under assault from within. When a leader uses the language of democracy to dismantle democratic norms, they aren’t leading—they are managing a decline. The attempt to redraw these maps isn’t about representation; it’s about a career politician who got elected on a pile of moderate lies and is now desperate to cement a permanent majority before the voters realize they’ve been conned.

This scripture perfectly describes the hollow nature of political flattery. It warns us that those who use “smooth talk” and “bipartisan” branding are often masking a desire for control and the destruction of established order. It reminds us to look past the gracious words of the tongue to the actual fruits of a person’s actions.
Prayer for the People of Virginia
Heavenly Father, we ask that You pour out a spirit of discernment upon the citizens of Virginia. Open the eyes of those who have been blinded by clever slogans and false promises. Protect the integrity of our elections and our borders from those who seek to manipulate them for personal power. We pray that the truth would be revealed and that the good people of the Commonwealth would have the strength to stand up for fairness and honesty. Grant us leaders who fear You more than they love their own authority. Amen.
